Possibilities in Oil Painting
with Hodges Soileau

In this three-day workshop I will try to impart some of the principles of painting that I use and consider most important, whether one is working in oils, or any medium that uses color.  The principles of shape, value, color temperature, edge quality, composition, and paint quality are what is most important, and I stress these in all my workshops.  For example, color is important, but not as important as color temperature.  When one is painting from life, the temperature of the light determines the temperature of the color in the light and shadow areas.  This will be addressed and demonstrated in this workshop.

I will do a demonstration at the beginning of each day showing different ways to begin a painting.  There is no best way to do this.  One must remain open to the possibilities.  I try to have options in my arsenal that allow me to tackle any subject, and this sometimes might require a different approach.

Last, but not least, is the importance of having fun.  Painting, although difficult, should be fun.
